Whether you have been growing for years or are new to the growing culture, water filtration is important and styles are changing as knowledge spreads on how to achieve the purest form of water possible. There is more than one way to reach water purity, the most common for Marijuana growers still being Reverse Osmosis (R/O). A cost effective and worry-free solution is Ultraviolet Radiation which is currently being used around the globe to sterilize ponds, pools, and even drinking water! If you wouldn’t drink water that isn’t properly filtered, do you think your plants will?
Reverse Osmosis is the process of filtering forced water through a semi-permeable membrane that allows pure water to pass through, leaving the salts and other minerals on the back side. Within these systems, Carbon filters are responsible for removing Chlorine, Fluoride and heavy metals from the solution. This filtration style can be costly as it takes around 6 liters (more if contamination is excessively high) of untreated home water to filter 1 liter of pure water. R/O water becomes “stripped of all minerals…and the reverse osmosis water will always need to be adjusted” (Royal Queen Seeds, 2017, p.1).
With a UV system, the water is treated as it flows through the chamber that houses the UV light which not only damages, but inactivates the DNA of free floating, single cell bacteria and pathogens. (Royal Queen Seeds, 2018, p.1) Ultraviolet Light is completely chemical free and produces no dangerous byproducts as it is the same radiation that emits from sunlight. Another option is Ozone treatment, which can be expensive. It’s been waaaaay to long since I’ve done the calculations for flow rate vs UV dose, so I’d have to break out the formulas to say for sure; Though I usually ran them with single pass sterilization. One easy tip if you use Aqua UV, is to run 1/4 of the flow rate they show (max). If I remember it right then, 1/4 of rated flow was either a single pass dose or was fully sterilized within 1 hour (1 hour would have been considering the 300-gallon system volume and time for 99% sterilization)” (MGRox, THCfarmer, 2015).
